Enabling biodiversity-positive transformation of energy planning towards climate neutrality
About BIOGAIN
BIOGAIN investigates how Europe can plan renewable energy in a crowded landscape while working towards a biodiversity net gain. We bring together AI-assisted monitoring and novel biodiversity datasets — from acoustics and satellites to UAVs and environmental DNA — to fill the data gaps planners face today. Through serious games, choice experiments, and collaborative decision analyses across five universities and three case-study regions, we test how better data can tip planning toward nature-positive outcomes.
BIOGAIN partners presented preliminary findings on biodiversity net gain and impact assessment at the Future of Impact Assessment International Conference in Liverpool.
BIOGAIN researchers hosted an ECCB 2026 roundtable on bringing biodiversity indicators and data-sharing into renewable energy planning at an earlier stage.
Five European universities meet in Vienna to start work on BIOGAIN, a Biodiversa+ project exploring how AI-supported biodiversity data can move renewable energy planning from mitigation to biodiversity net-gain.
